The Importance of Routines

Humans are creatures of habit, and that’s why it’s so important that we form and follow routines that support our health and wellness. Research has shown that people who don’t have a routine tend to experience more stress, poor quality of sleep, poor eating habits, poor physical condition, and don’t use their time effectively. Let’s jump into how each of these manifest when someone doesn’t have a routine:

  • When you don’t follow a routine, you have a higher likelihood of worrying about when you’ll be able to get everything done.

  • In addition, if you’re not able to accomplish everything you need to, and you always have a running to-do list, it may be hard to fall asleep, or stay asleep, because your mind will always be running and trying to keep track of all that you still need to do.

  • Without a routine, it can also be really tricky to find the time needed to grocery shop, make home-cooked meals, and spend time with your food, making it incredibly difficult to have healthy eating habits that support your well-being.

  • If there isn’t a specific time in the day reserved for physical activity, that can also be something that tends to fall by the wayside.

  • And, finally, one of the worst feelings, is “running out of time.” Without boundaries around when you give energy to various tasks and goals, you will certainly experience this feeling often.

So what sort of shifts can happen with a routine?

  • Stress Levels Decrease: Because stress negatively impacts our wellness and can lead to conditions such as heart disease, it’s really important that we keep it at bay as much as we can. With a routine, you have specific times and intentions for each project or task that you take on which is calming to the nervous system. There’s also a greater likelihood that you’ll get everything done that you need to get done which is also soothing.

  • You’ll Get Better Sleep: Your daily routine directly influences your quality of sleep. One of the most helpful routine tips is to wake up and go to sleep at around the same time every day. By prioritizing the amount of sleep you get, and making it a part of your daily routine, you can increase your mental sharpness, work performance, emotional well-being, and energy levels.

  • You’ll Impact Your Health for the Better: By committing to a routine that includes daily movement and a commitment to connecting with, and cooking, your food, you will experience a significant shift in your wellness (for the better).
